PM Modi embarks on 3-Nation Tour, calls Brazil's G20 role India’s Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on Saturday for a five-day visit to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana, marking a significant moment in India's diplomatic engagements. The visit includes Modi's first trip to Nigeria, his participation in the G20 Summit in Brazil, and a historic visit to Guyana, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over five decades.  

In his departure statement, Modi emphasized the strategic importance of his visit, highlighting the shared values and historical connections India has with these nations. “Nigeria is a close partner in West Africa, and this visit is an opportunity to build on our shared belief in democracy and pluralism,” he stated. Modi also expressed enthusiasm for meeting the Indian community in Nigeria, noting their warm messages in Hindi.

Strengthening global partnerships  

Modi will attend the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, representing India as part of the G20 Troika alongside Brazil and South Africa. Reflecting on India's presidency of the G20 in 2023, Modi praised the people-centric approach and efforts to prioritize the Global South’s needs. He acknowledged Brazil’s continuation of India’s legacy in this regard.  

“I look forward to meaningful discussions under the vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’ This platform also provides an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations with other world leaders,” Modi noted.  

The final leg of his tour will take him to Guyana, where he will engage with President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and attend the second India-CARICOM Summit. Modi emphasized the importance of India’s historical ties with Guyana, home to one of the oldest Indian diaspora communities. He will also address the Guyanese Parliament and explore new areas of cooperation to deepen the relationship between the two nations.  

This three-nation tour underscores India’s commitment to fostering partnerships, addressing global challenges, and enhancing its role in international diplomacy.
